Outreach Core Objectives
The Outreach Core plans to work with community members to address health concerns associated with environmental contamination in their area, by forging links between communities and SBRP researchers and other activities. Initially, most activities will take place in the Lake Apopka area of central Florida, although a specific aim is to expand the Outreach Core community network. A Community Advisory Board will guide the Outreach Core and SBRP personnel have already held meetings with community representatives to collect suggestions for Outreach Core activities. The specific aims presented below summarize recommended activities set forth at an initial Core/Community meeting and are organized by three different roles for the Outreach Core.
1. Outreach Core as Resource Center

a. Maintain an accessible, regularly updated website with resources for and about community groups with which we work;

b. Act as a clearinghouse for community-oriented materials and information developed by groups nationwide on environmental health issues;

c. Collect oral histories and other qualitative or ethnographic data from community members as requested and prepare such data for use in presentation to outside parties.

2. Outreach Core as Liaison

a. Link community members with SBRP and other University of Florida researchers on environmental health issues the community identifies as being of concern;

b. Link community groups with which we work to other regional community groups concerned with environmental health in order to eventually form a network;

c. Work with community groups to develop a process to bring together area health care providers and community members to address local environmental health issues.

3. Outreach Core as Sponsor

a. Develop a mini-grants program through which community groups and conduct their own projects related to environmental health;

b. Facilitate SBRP presentations at local health related events;

c. Invite and sponsor community-oriented speakers on environmental health issues;

d. Work with community groups to develop and help sponsor a community-oriented conference
